Nibo Union Election: A Looming Crisis That Demands Anambra State’s Intervention
By Ernest Ude
The forthcoming Nibo Union election, slated for April 4th, 2026, has become more than a routine leadership transition. It is now a matter of grave concern, threatening the peace, stability, and collective heritage of Nibo town. What should be a democratic exercise has instead been hijacked by oligarchic interests, land grabbers, and unscrupulous actors whose actions risk plunging the community into chaos.
The Threat to Nibo’s Stability
Under the leadership of Prof. Tony Nwokoye, Nibo has enjoyed relative stability and progress. His refusal to align with exploitative agendas has made him a target of powerful individuals who now seek to remove him at all costs. Petitions submitted to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo reveal disturbing realities:
- Illegal Land Sales: Oligarchs are selling communal lands, undermining the heritage of Ndi Nibo.
- Cultist Sponsorship: They sponsor cultist activities, using unemployed youths as instruments of fear and intimidation.
- Electoral Manipulation: Vulnerable youths are being bought with cash inducements. One oligarch recently shared ₦3.5 million, promising more after the election is won.
- Unfit Leadership: Their candidate, a second‑year student of a private university with questionable credentials, is being positioned as a puppet leader to serve their destructive schemes.
The Youth Factor
Nibo’s home‑based youths represent one of the most unemployed demographics in the region. Instead of investing in industries or empowerment programs, these oligarchs exploit their desperation with financial handouts. This entrenches poverty, fuels bias, and perpetuates instability. The youths, who should be empowered to build factories and create opportunities, are instead being bought for unscrupulous agendas.
Timing Concerns
The election is scheduled during Easter, a period when many of Nibo’s elites abroad cannot return to vote. This leaves the process vulnerable to manipulation by those who thrive on intimidation and bribery. Already, gatherings linked to illegal land dealings have been reported, further heightening fears of unrest.
Why Postponement Is Crucial
Postponing the election is not merely a political decision—it is a necessary step to safeguard peace and stability. If allowed to proceed under current conditions:
- Nibo risks descending into chaos and insecurity.
- Trust in community leadership will erode.
- Illegal land sales and exploitation will accelerate.
- The town’s progress will be reversed by selfish interests.
Call to Action
The Anambra State Government must urgently step in to:
- Cancel or postpone the election until credible safeguards are in place.
- Deploy enhanced security to deter cultist activities and violence.
- Investigate illegal land transactions to protect communal heritage.
- Promote youth empowerment initiatives that address unemployment rather than exploit it.
This election is not just about leadership—it is about protecting the soul of Nibo from exploitation, lawlessness, and instability. The petitions submitted to the Governor reflect the collective cry of concerned citizens who seek peace, justice, and progress. The time to act is now, before Nibo’s hard‑earned stability is shattered.
